Volunteers spread holiday cheer at Thanksgiving
By Carolyn Dryer
It was a smaller crowd
than expected, much smaller than the 670
people who showed up two days before for the
regular Tuesday hot meal.
Wings of Peace volunteers served about 250 to 300 people Thanksgiving Day at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 49th and Northern avenues. Wings founder Louise Pennartz and her crew were up at dawn to prepare for an overflow crowd. But, Pennartz guessed that many of the regulars who show up every Tuesday for a hot meal may have gone to relatives' homes for the holiday. |

| Still, there were many who came to eat the only hot meal they would have last Thursday. And, there was enough food so that to-go plates could be piled high with all the fixins.' |
And the Ellis family had prepared enough gift bags to hand out to each person who walked through the door. The gift bags contained crocheted hats (all sizes) and hygiene items, as well as small toys for toddlers.
Families took turns serving up the hot food, and even those who came for the food, like Artie Wallace, helped out by taking out the garbage bags as they filled up.
All in all, it was deemed a success. And there is one more holiday meal left in 2009.
Wings of Peace will be serving its Christmas dinner 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 22 at Knights of Columbus Hall.
